After sending the trespassing troll to his own home I first made sure that it did have a warm place to stay. The storm had really picked up now and the frigid wind was blowing strong and hard. The wolves didn’t seem to even notice the changing weather. I hoped that Nestor was warm enough in the stables where I left him.
The troll it turns out lives beside a very large and very popular kitchen where a family of ice giants cook their world famous ice cakes day and night for the wolves in the barracks and for all of the villages nearby. That troll may in fact have the warmest home in the region. As I pull my cloak tightly around me I think I might even be a little jealous.
I can’t image what it will be like traveling to the Far North where they say the rivers never move and even the air is frozen and still.
The more I watch the wolves, and the colder the wind gets, the more I begin to suspect that they are just preparing for the coming winter and not for some war. As disciplined as the rangers are we are not as rigid as the wolves so everything they do seems so serious that I wonder what they do for fun. Do they even have fun?
When I arrived at the commander’s room I found that he had only just returned from a trip. He spoke from the back of his horse, and never even took off his helmet. His clawed hand like paw always stayed close to the sword at his side.
Commander Zan said “I am not the White Ghost” immediately as I entered the room, “though I may have seen your foe. This person travels almost as far and wide as I do. The dust has been found at all the regions of Coalis so we know the White Ghost has been everywhere.”
I was curious about what he meant when he said that he may have see the White Ghost so I asked.
“There have been many mysterious and unexpected visits recently. You Ranger Clarice, Hermes Didious, and just the other day while I was traveling I stayed at an inn and a stranger in a white cloak knocked on the door. When I answered he quickly turned his head and said ‘Sorry I thought this was my room,’ and then he left. I never saw his face and stories of the White Ghost were only just beginning to reach us so I didn’t think much of it at the time.
Should I have been suspicious or do you think it was just some guy who only happened to have been wearing a white cloak?
